United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN)

Australia and New Zealand are active in the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) Asia, South East and Pacific, South West Division.  UNGEGN provides information on geographical naming policies and practices including standardisation, with an aim to improve international communication.  Mr John Parker, the Victorian Registrar of Place Names, represents Australia in the Division and at its meeting in June 1996, Australia was elected to Chair the Division, taking over from New Zealand.

Representation by CGNA at UN regional conferences has helped Australia participate and be actively involved in the development of world best practice in the management of place names.

UNGEGN has published (September 1999) a brochure titled "Consistent use of Place Names" which can be viewed or downloaded from this site.
