CGNA - United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN)
Australia and New Zealand are active in the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) Asia, South East and Pacific, South West Division. UNGEGN provides information on geographical naming policies and practices including standardisation, with an aim to improve international communication. The Chair of CGNA generally represents Australia at UNGEGN meetings and conferences.
Representation by CGNA at UN regional conferences has helped Australia participate and be actively involved in the development of world best practice in the management of place names.
In 2009 CGNA, on behalf of UNGEGN, completed the production of a fully revised regional map and gazetteer of Asia South East, Pacific South West. This comprised three separate products:
- The map – .pdf format 4.0 MB
- The Gazetteer sorted by place name (regardless of which country they are in) – .pdf format, 271 pages, 4.1 MB
- The Gazetteer sorted by country and then by place name – .pdf format, 281 pages, 3.9 MB
UNGEGN published (September 1999) a brochure titled "Consistent use of Place Names" (pdf 1.68Mb)
