The South Australian Department for Environemnt, Heritage and Aboriginal Affairs (now the Department for Environment & Heritage) has produced and extremly useful booklet titled
'Where in the World are We?'  This uses everyday language to explain the complex concepts associated with datums.  A word of warning - this Version (1.7) was released in 1999 and since then values in the Transformation Paramaters will have changed slightly, but the principles behind them have not!

The National Mapping Division of Geoscience Australia has made available a handy Map Reading Guide on How to Use Topographic Maps.  This guide is particularly useful for GPS users as it deals with the practicalities of how to use such technology with hardcopy maps.

In general the contents cover:
  - How to read a topographic map (including scales, datums, co-ordinates etc)
  - Planning a trip
  - Using a GPS (with a map)
  - The magnetic compass
  - Simple uses of a map.

The guide is available for download from the following Geoscience Australia site and also can be purchased at the reasonable rate of $2 per copy.
