Australasian All-Hazards Symbols Working Group

In 2006-07 a Victorian based GIS company, Spatial Vision, undertook a gap analysis of symbols used by Australian and New Zealand emergency services agencies.  This review was fully funded by ICSM and it is part of a staged approach to establishing an Australasian All-Hazards Symbol library.

The review entailed:

Task 1
Conducting an audit of key agencies involved in emergency management and response to compile a nationally consistent Incident Management System (IMS) symbology resource catalogue.  An IMS may encompass Incident Command/Control Systems (ICS).

Task 2
Conducting an audit to define the major categories of symbols for all-hazards used or required by Emergency Managers and response personnel and develop documentation outlining which categories of symbols are relevant to different types of organisations and events, gaps in existing categories and priority areas for additional work.

Feedback and the Final Report

Early drafts of the report have been reviewed within the Emergency Management community and feedback incorporated into a final report.  This feedback has now been received by ICSM.  Two actions have occurred:

  1. Minor typographical errors (ie those not affecting the content of the report) and changes agreed by EMSINA have been done.

  2. Feedback items which have not been resolved at this stage have been summarised in Appendix G and the full feedback statements included in Attachment A.
