Roads Working Group
(RWG)

Purpose

The Roads working group was established in May 2005 in recognition of the need to establish and maintain a nationally consistent approach to capturing roads information.  A national data model is to be developed to set a base level requirement for the capture of features and attributes.  Under this model individual agencies would continue to capture data to meet their information using existing frameworks, but they would also have the capacity to supply national data in a consistent manner.

There are synergies which can be utilised from the Harmonised Data Manual (HDM).

What's New?             Roads Data Dictionary

In January 2010 the Roads Working Group released a list of proposed features for roads data model - a data dictionary.

The Roads Working Group is seeking feedback on the data dictionary in order to improve its relevance and applicability to users of spatial data.  Please use this link to email your comments to the ICSM Executive Officer.

National Road Classification Systems

In October 2006 the Roads Working Group released a report to ICSM on the Feasability of a National Road Classification System.  Read the full report Assessing the Feasability of a National Road Classification System or its The Executive Summary.

Recommendations contained in this report are:

Recommendation 1
To further investigate the utility and practicality of a rural/urban segregation of the PSMA road classification hierarchy, through discussion with relevant road transport and traffic authorities.

Recommendation 2
To refine the existing PSMA Road classification to enable better differentiation of local and State roads through liaison with relevant government representatives.

Recommendation 3
That additional variables of traffic volume, design speed, travel distance, route numbering, population measures and structural considerations, be investigated for possible inclusion as additional determinants of road classification type, either within the classification itself or in additional guidelines or decision trees.

Recommendation 4
To engage road traffic and transport authorities to investigate the feasibility of the periodic supply of coordinated higher order roads network classifications from road transport and traffic authorities.

Recommendation 5
To develop additional guidelines that contain decision-tree diagrams, supplementary instructions and examples that aid in the interpretation of road classification.

Recommendation 6
To consult with National Parks, State Forests and Indigenous Lands authorities to gauge their requirements for attribution of lower order roads for possible inclusion into a national classification, or in a separate attribute field in such a classification.

Recommendation 7
To adopt a cooperative approach between all levels of government (to agree) to implement a mutually acceptable national road classification system.

RWG Terms of Reference

The Roads Working Group is to:

  1. Engage with key government bodies and industry stakeholder groups on a cooperative approach to consistently maintain road centreline datasets. (Include liaisons with Street Addressing Review Group).

  2. Coordinate the development of nationally consistent data model for road centrelines with jurisdictions and the PSMA model, that maps jurisdictional schemas/models to a national model based on the PSMA model.

  3. Ensure that the Data Dictionary is incorporated into the HDM.

EuroRoadS

Similar to ICSM's Roads Working Group, EuroRoadS is working towards creating a coordinated, colligate approach to capturing roads information across Europe.
